In the first version, some commenters mentioned some holes in my calculations. I wrote the original quite fast and thought I had taken care of everything. However, with the help of commenters and my own review there were a number of problems identified:

- The formula and its components was not explained in good detail.
- I said constant damage numbers (say, 3) from saber crystals got doubled from critical hits while variable damage numbers (say, 1-6) did not. It is actually the opposite. (see KoTOR Critical Hits on StrategyWiki)
- I was missing parentheses in many calculations making it harder to follow the math.
- I did not calculate some feat and saber crystal combinations that could have higher damage.
- I did not consider the Guardian’s Light side/Dark side bonus to damage.

I believe I have addressed all of these in this version.

While playing Knights of the Old Republic, I came across the question of which combat feat is the best. I remember asking this question way back when, but I never went through the numbers to see for sure. I do remember seeing some forum threads about it, but everyone seemed to disagree about which was best. I hope to get a pretty good estimate here of what each one is capable of. Note that this is for the first game only (KotOR 1), not the sequel (KotOR 2).

Now, the answer depends on quite a few variables. These depend on the choices you made for your character. For the purposes of the calculations, I make a number of assumptions. These are the choices I would make for my character. Using the formulas below, you can do your own calculations for your personal choices if they are different. The choices that influence damage are:

- Combat Feat (Power Attack, Critical Strike, Flurry)
- Weapon (Single lightsaber, Two sabers, Double-bladed)
- Primary Attribute (Strength, Dexterity)
- Saber Crystals (Damage, Critical Hit, Mixed)
- Class (Scoundrel and Guardian special bonuses)

If you do the numbers, there are over 70 possibilities. I don’t have enough space to show the full math all of them. Instead, I show how I calculate the various components of the formula and give a few examples using the big formula. I then include the final damage for all the possibilities in a list for easy comparison.

# Attacks_Per_Round

This is fairly easy to calculate. The only confusing part is if you use Two lightsabers.

Attacks_Per_Round = Base_Attacks_Per_Round + Feat Bonus

Base Attacks Per Round

This is just the attacks you get from your weapon. A single lightsaber obviously gets **1** attack, but a double-bladed lightsaber gets **2** attacks.

Feat Bonus

For my calculations I always assume Master Force Speed is up. It gives **2** extra attacks per round. If you use the Flurry feat, you get **1** additional attack per round.

Dual-wielding Two Sabers

In this special case you have two separate lightsabers. Because they can have different lightsaber crystals, they can have different damage and critical chance. You can’t simply add 1 extra attack per round. You need to do two separate calculations: one for the main hand weapon and another for the off hand weapon.

Master Force Speed and Flurry only add attacks to the main hand. The off hand weapon does not gain any extra attacks from those feats. For example, with both feats the main hand saber will have 4 attacks per round while the off hand has 1 attack per round.

# Critical_Affected_Damage

This is all the damage sources that do more damage with critical hits. This includes weapon damage, some saber crystal damage, Strength damage bonuses, and a possible Guardian bonus.

Critical_Affected_Damage = Weapon_Average + Saber_Crystals_Average + Master_Power_Attack + Guardian_Bonus + Strength_Damage

The average of two numbers is simply:

Average_Damage = (Minimum_Damage + Maximum_Damage) / 2

Weapons

Single lightsaber: 2-16 damage => (2+16) / 2 = **9** average damage.

Double-bladed lightsaber: 2-20 damage => (2+20) / 2 = **11** average damage.

Saber Crystals

Upari with Heart of the Guardian: 2-12 damage => (2+12) / 2 = **7** average damage.

Solari with Heart of the Guardian: 1-10 damage => **5.5** average damage. (Light Side Only)

Phond with Heart of the Guardian: 1-10 damage => **5.5** average damage (Dark Side Only)

Sigil with Mantle of the Force: 1-8 damage = **4.5** average damage.

Master Power Attack (optional)

If you use Master Power Attack, you get **+10** melee damage. It has penalties to defense, but we only care about damage here.

Guardian Bonus (optional)

If you choose the Guardian class, you will get one of two damage bonuses depending on which side you chose. Light Side gets +3 Strength; Dark Side gets 1-8 damage. The Strength bonus factors into the Strength damage below. The Dark Side bonus is **4.5** average damage.

Strength Damage

Unlike Dexterity, Strength gives a bonus to melee damage equal to its modifier. I assume you put 16 in Strength at character creation, 5 more from levels, and 3 more from items for a total of 24. That’s **+6** melee damage. This is the number I assume for my calculations, except if it is a Light Side Guardian. In that case, I assume 27 Strength for **+7** melee damage. If it is a Dexterity build, I assume 12 Strength for **+1** melee damage for non-Guardians and 15 Strength for **+2** melee damage for Guardians.

# Critical_Chance

The weapons you equip give you a base critical chance which can be modified by the Master Critical Strike feat and Nextor saber crystal.

Critical_Chance = 1.00 + Base_Critical_Chance + Master_Critical_Strike + Nextor

Base Critical Strike

Because the game uses a 20-sided die to roll critical hits, there is a 1 in 20 chance at a critical hit by default. That’s the same as 5% critical chance. This is displayed in game as a critical threat of 20-20. The general formula for base critical chance is then:

Base_Critical_Chance = 5% * (1 + (20 – Critical_Threat_Minimum))

Single lightsaber: 19-20 critical threat => 5% * (1 + (20 – 19)) = **10%** critical chance

Double-bladed lightsaber: 20-20 critical threat => **5%** critical chance

Master Critical Strike

This quadruples your chance of getting a critical threat, but I only care how much it adds to the base critical chance. That means it adds 3 * Base_Critical_Chance.

Single lightsaber: 10% critical chance => Master Critical Strike adds **30%** critical chance.

Double-bladed lightsaber: 5% critical chance => Master Critical Strike adds **15%** critical chance.

Nextor

The description for Nextor says it adds the “Keen” effect to the weapon. Keen is just a short name for doubling the critical threat range, but I only care about how much it adds to the base critical chance. Simply add the base critical chance a second time.

Single lightsaber: 10% critical chance => Keen adds **10%** critical chance.

Double-bladed lightsaber: 5% critical chance => Master Critical Strike adds **5%** critical chance.

Example:

I use a double-bladed lightsaber with Master Critical Strike. The Base Critical Chance is 5%, and Master Critical Strike adds 15%; Critical Chance is 20% or 17-20 critical threat. If we also used a Nextor crystal, Critical Chance would be 25% or 16-20 critical threat.

# Non_Critical_Affected_Damage

These are damage sources that don’t get any bonus damage from critical hits. It includes the Scoundrel’s Sneak Attack feat, the Opila saber crystal, and constant damage saber crystals.

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = Sneak_Attack + Opila + Other_Crystals

Sneak Attack

The Scoundrel has a special feat called Sneak Attack that gives them bonus damage against stunned enemies, such as enemies afflicted by the Master Critical Strike stun. Thus, this damage is only added when Master Critical Strike is used. If only using one weapon (Single lightsaber, Double-bladed), use the first formula here. For Two weapons (duel-wielding), use the second formula.

One Weapon Sneak Attack = (Attacks_Per_Round – 1 / Attacks_Per_Round) * Sneak_Attack_Damage

Main Hand Sneak Attack = Sneak_Attack_Damage

Off Hand Sneak Attack = 0

When using Critical Strike, the Stun effect occurs at the end of the first attack, so the first attack does not get the Sneak Attack damage. That’s why these formulas are a little more complicated. I assume the character has Sneak Attack 4 (level 8 Scoundrel), 4-24 damage for **14** average damage, and that the Master Critical Strike has a 100% Stun chance for easier calculations.

Opila

This particular crystal has a unique damage bonus called Massive Criticals. It does 2-12 damage (7 average damage) but only on a critical hit. To get it’s contribution to damage, you must take into account critical chance.

Opila = 3 + Massive_Criticals_Damage * (1.00 – Critical_Chance)

Other Crystals

The saber crystals that do constant damage like Sapith (3 damage) and Rubat (1 damage) do not get doubled with critical hits. Only crystal damage that is variable (in the form x – y) gets more damage from criticals. I don’t use any of these crystals in my calculations except for Opila. If you use any others, add their damage in this part.

# General Damage Formula

This is the general damage formula for one attack with a weapon.

Total_Damage_Per_Round = Attacks_Per_Round * ((Critical_Affected_Damage * Critical_Chance) + Non_Critical_Affected_Damage)

When using a single lightsaber or double-bladed lightsaber, you only have one weapon. Just crunch the numbers in the formula. However, when using two lightsabers you have to crunch the numbers twice: one for each weapon. Refer to the Attacks Per Round section above for information on how many attacks you get with each weapon.

Examples:

**Master Critical Strike, Dexterity, Single Lightsaber, Damage Crystals, Dark Side** Scoundrel

Strength: 1 damage.

Single lightsaber: 1 attack per round, 9 average damage, 10% critical chance

Upari crystal: 7 average damage; Phond crystal: 5.5 average damage

Master Critical Strike: 30% critical chance

Master Force Speed: 2 attacks per round

Attacks_Per_Round = 1 + 2 = 3

Sneak Attack: (3-1 / 3) * 14 average damage = 9.33

Critical_Affected_Damage = 9 + 7 + 5.5 + 1 = 22.5

Critical_Chance = 1.0 + 0.1 + 0.3 = 1.4

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = 9.33

Total_Damage_Per_Round = 3 * (22.5 * (1.4)) + 9.33) = **122.5**

**Master Power Attack, Strength, Double-bladed Lightsaber, Damage Crystals, Dark Side Guardian**

Strength: 6 Damage

Double-bladed lightsaber: 2 attacks per round, 11 average damage, 5% critical chance

Upari crystal: 7 average damage: Phond crystal: 5.5 average damage

Dark Side Guardian: 4.5 average damage

Master Power Attack: 10 damage

Master Force Speed: 2 attacks per round

Attacks_Per_Round = 2 + 2 = 4

Critical_Affected_Damage = 11 + 7 + 5.5 + 10 + 4.5 + 6 = 44

Critical_Chance = 1.0 + 0.05 = 1.05

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = 0

Total_Damage_Per_Round = 4 * (44 * (1.05)) + 0) =**184.8**

Strength: 1 Damage

Single-bladed lightsaber: 1 attacks per round, 9 average damage, 10% critical chance

Weapon 1 Opila crystal: 3 damage +2-12 critical; Weapon 1 Nextor crystal: Keen

Weapon 2 Opila crystal: 3 damage +2-12 critical; Weapon 2 Nextor crystal: Keen

Master Force Speed: 2 attacks per round

Master Flurry: 1 attack per round

Keen: +10% critical chance

Weapon 1

Attacks_Per_Round = 1 + 2 + 1 = 4

Critical_Affected_Damage = 9 + 1 = 10

Critical_Chance = 1.0 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 1.2

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = 3 + (7 * 0.2) = 4.4

Total_Damage_Per_Round = 4 * (10 * (1.2)) + 4.4) = 65.6

Weapon 2

Attacks_Per_Round = 1

Critical_Affected_Damage = 9 + 1 = 10

Critical_Chance = 1.0 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 1.2

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = 3 + (7 * 0.2) = 4.4

Total_Damage_Per_Round = 1 * (10 * (1.2)) + 4.4) = 16.4

Total_Damage_Both_Weapons = 65.6 + 16.4 = **82

# Conclusions

Based on this analysis, I can answer a few questions:

Q. Which of the three combat feats does the best damage?

A. In general, Power Attack does the most damage followed by Flurry in second and Critical Strike in last. However, the Scoundrel’s Sneak Attack shakes things up a bit. With Sneak Attacks added in, Critical Strike jumps into the top spot with Power Attack in second and Flurry in last. This requires Sneak Attack 3 or 4 though. With lower Sneak Attack levels, Power Attack may maintain the top spot.

Q. Which of the 3 weapon configurations does the best damage?

A. A single lightsaber always does the least damage, though no feats are required to maximize its damage. Between the double-bladed lightsaber and two lightsabers, it depends on the combat feat and saber crystals used. Here is a simple chart:

Q. How much more damage does a Strength build do over a Dexterity build?

A. A Strength build will do 20-30 more damage per round than a Dexterity build. Don’t forget that Dexterity will also improve your Armor Class and To Hit numbers, both good on the higher difficulties.

Baragwin Assault Blade — 17-20 crit, keen, care to run the numbers with this weapon as a soldier/guardian with melee weapon focus, spec (+1atk, +2dmg) you would be surprised how good the weapon is with crit strike.

I had more time this afternoon then I thought and did the numbers:

Master Critical Strike, Strength, Baragwin Assault Blade, Dark Side Guardian

Strength: 6 damage

Baragwin Assault Blade: 1 attack per round, 21 average damage, 20% critical chance

Dark Side Guardian: 4.5 average damage

Master Critical Strike: 30% critical chance

Master Force Speed: 2 attacks per round

Attacks_Per_Round = 1 + 2 = 3

Critical_Affected_Damage = 21 + 4.5 + 6 = 31.5

Critical_Chance = 1.2 + 0.3 = 1.5

Non_Critical_Affected_Damage = 0

Total_Damage_Per_Round = 3 * ((31.5 * 1.5) + 0) = 141.75 (150.75 with Weapon Spec)

Weapon Specialization can be added to any build, so 141.75 is a closer comparison to the calculations I already did. Even without that, it seems to be the top damage from the quick check I did. It really comes down to that high base damage. A single lightsaber can have 21.5 average damage with damage crystals, but then it can’t have Keen. With Keen, the single lightsaber can only have a max of 16 damage.

Still, there are some downsides to the Baragwin Assault Blade. Some players just like the look of lightsabers more. It’s a Star Wars game after all. Also, being a melee weapon it requires a Strength build to have good To Hit numbers. Its damage (141.75) is really not that much higher than the lightsaber (134.4) either. Force speed doesn’t give extra attacks per round when using either critical strike or power attack.

Hmm…I didn’t think of that. Just to be clear, you are referring to KoTOR 1? I don’t have KoTOR 2, so this does not apply to that game at all. Maybe the first attack is the only one that gets the Power Attack or Critical Strike bonus, but I still think Force Speed adds 2 attacks per round.

I couldn’t find any information about this on a quick search online. I might have some free time during the holidays to do some tests in the game. Manually parsing the combat logs is time consuming though. I can’t give a date when I will have an update on this.

I confess that I did not do well in probability and statistics, but I don’t think

that you are calculating the critical hits damage correctly. In my understanding critical hits mean that all affected damage is doubled. With master critical strike without keen crystals we have a 40% chance. The correct formula would be:

Total_Damage_Per_Round=Attacks_Per_Round *(((2*Critical_Affected_Damage+Non_Critical_Affected_Damage)*.4)+(Non_Critical_Affected_Damage+Critical_Affected_Damaged)*.6))

Also, I think that it was a mistake to leave out the attack penalties. I did the calculations for one arrangement (scoundrel7/consular13 with +7 STR with 2 lightsabers: solari/upari (main) and sapith/pearl (off) against an already compromised opponent (Malak) with defense 38 (if he is actually debilitated in the game he goes down to 30). I came up with from best to worst: critical strike (at 57.465 vps per round), flurry (at 53.47 vps per round), and power attack (at 35.55 vps per round). That -3 attack penalty makes a big difference (flurry has -1 penalty). This also included the -2/-2 dual wield penalty with master two weapons feat.
